3 Ways to Add Fall Without Adding Clutter

Are you over buying stuff to decorate for the fall months, only to put it in a storage bin for most of the year? That’s where I was several years ago when I discovered I could bring the “feel” of fall into my home without needing several extra large plastic tubs for storage once I was ready to take it all down. It was so freeing to discover the concept of creating a seasonal feeling rather than seasonal decorating, and I haven’t looked back since ditching all the extra stuff. Some years I add a little more, some years a little less, but I always stick with these three basics in order to keep autumnal decor simple, yet beautiful. Here are 3 ways to add fall without adding clutter.

Plaid Blankets:

Adding a plaid blanket to the end of a bed or the arm of a sofa is one of the easiest and most inexpensive ways to bring a hint of fall to your space. If you choose a neutral plaid, it can transition into the Christmas/winter season as well! This blanket is the first thing I pull out when I begin to pine for autumn. It allows me to participate in the ritual of transitioning my home to fall without overwhelming my house with stuff. I prefer to decorate organically, not all at once, so after the plaid blanket comes out, it’s a gradual process from there; one that I allow to take as long as it needs to in order to feel right and not rushed.

Here are my picks for affordable, beautiful plaid blankets to cozy up any space this fall:

Pillows:

Changing up your pillow covers seasonally is another way to change the feel of a space without switching up all of your decor or adding clutter. This change is one of my absolute favorite things to do, as I get bored easily but don’t want to waste money redecorating just because my eyes are tired of looking at the same old things. There is comfort in familiar objects, so rotating simple things like pillow covers helps you walk the line of having a comfortable home that is interesting at the same time. Oftentimes, I don’t change every cover. I simply add a few fall covers in with the ones I already have and it provides a whole new look for very little expense.

Here are my favorite pillow covers for fall:

Dried Botanicals:

I’m a nature lover, and as summer gives way to fall, I can’t help but want to bring all the beauty of the dried and even dead flora in my area into my home. The colors are so beautiful, muted, deep and earthy. This year I went on the hunt for tumbleweeds after I had the idea to use one in my fireplace. It was quite the adventure (and one my family didn’t quite understand) but my vision came to life and I’m loving my fall fireplace. You’ll also notice I used some dried flowers (not sure what they are) on the mantel. Both of these beauties infuse the room with a feeling of fall that brings me so much calm and happiness.

If foraging isn’t your thing or you’re afraid of bringing bugs into your house, here is my source for all dried botanicals.

I truly hope this season brings you peace, comfort, and inspiration rather than stress, busyness, and clutter. Fall is one of the most beautiful times of year, and it should be enjoyed, not endured. So throw a plaid blanket on your sofa, add in some fall-colored pillows, and bring the outdoors inside, and you’ll be surrounded by the feeling of fall without the clutter of seasonal decor.

Autumn Blessings,

I’m working on finding the lamps for you. I bought them at Home Goods but I know I’ve seen them around.
